My name is Rory. I’m a children’s recording artist and songwriter, born and raised in Washington, D.C. I feel really lucky to be able to do something I love, and that’s creating music for young children. In this blog I’ll share some of the stories behind those songs.
My mom was a big band singer in New York City in the 1940’s. And those vocalists she loved… Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the rest, became the musical soundtrack of my childhood. Our house hummed with the symphonic sounds of the great Broadway show overtures. And our backyard became an impromptu musical theater with neighborhood friends joining in during those relaxed Washington, D.C., summers.
Those indelible memories became the backdrop to my childhood dreams and later, my career in music.
I think it’s the joy that music brought me as a young child that I try to convey in the music I sing for kids today. I never heard nursery rhymes as a child. The music we listened to was sophisticated and beautifully arranged and performed with lush harmonies. That has pushed me and my wonderful collaborators (you’ll hear more about them later) to produce the highest quality music for children we can. And it’s so important to us that the adults in their lives enjoy it, too.
So for now I’ll close this first blog entry by saying how excited I am to introduce my newest song collection for little ones, “Little Lullaby.” My wonderful collaborator, Rob Henley, and I wanted to choose some unexpected songs for this album, and give them our own signature sound.
“Little Lullaby“ was released in January. We really hope you’ll love it and want to share it with the little ones in your lives.
COMING MONDAY, Feb. 8th: I will be releasing my brand new video, “Family,” which goes along with the song of the same name. I will share the story behind the song here, as well.
